Working in InDesign

In the first InDesign workshop, we began to learn skills and techniques on how to lay out a page of a magazine.

Layout Ideas - Thumbnails

I have sketched a few layout ideas in the form of thumbnails that I could use to present my article. I have thought about size and scale, positioning, shapes and the combination of text and image within the layout. I think that the illustrations of the spider gives the newspaper article the slight informal feel that I wanted, but I have also kept the designs quite simple and clean.
I will use these ideas to help create mock ups of the layout.

Working in Photoshop

We was firstly given the four images below, none of the photographs are of great quality. We were then asked to combine all of the images together using Photoshop, and therefore making a better quality and more interesting image.

Although I already felt confident in using Photoshop, after following this tutorial I have learnt about a few more techniques and tools in which I can therefore use these in future practise. In this piece of work I had to think about rotating and rescaling the image to get the proportions right. I had to remove parts of the image by using the patch tool, and also using the layer mask to remove distractions in the background and to make the image better quality. Also I broadened my understanding in using transform and correction tools to give a more realistic result.
After adding the reflections to the bulb, I feel that the outcome is quite realistic and I am therefore pleased with the result. I however feel that the background is not as clean as it could be so in future practise I would make sure that this is not an issue.

Mood Board

As development for my story, I created a quick mood board to help set the mood and represent the characters and feelings in the story. It helps you be able to picture the story better than just reading the story alone. I will develop this mood board if I feel I need to do this further.

Creating Narrative

In the first session we was set a task of selecting a few articles from a newspaper which we could then use to create a short story of our own. This task has helped me to understand copyright, as I have used these articles for influence only.

These are the two articles that I used as influence for my story. Although they are completely different to each other, I have combined the two so that it makes sense as on story. Although I found that this wasn't the most enjoyable task, it got my brain thinking of some interesting ideas.

Welbeck a New Player After Deadly Bite
It was a Friday evening; I was preparing myself for the big game tomorrow. It was tough as there had been speculation all day of me finalizing a last minute move to Arsenal. My head was still with United, I was dreading what would happen on the last few hours of Transfer Deadline day.
Later that evening, the phone rang. It was my manager Louis Van Gaal,
“Welbz, you may have already heard the news, we’ve accepted a bid from Arsenal. You’ll complete your transfer tonight, good luck.”
“Am I not good enough?” I thought, “What’s the point of even trying?”
That one phone call had knocked all of the confidence out of me; something very spectacular would need to happen for me to resurrect my career at Arsenal.
I arrived at the Emirates Stadium after meeting up with the squad for the 3 o’clock kick off, and nervous is an understatement to how I felt. The manager was explaining how he was expecting big things from me, and therefore put me straight into the first team starting line-up for the game. No pressure then.
10 minutes before the match kicked off, I pulled on the Arsenal strip for the first time, I was trying to get myself focused which felt like an impossible task. As we stepped into the tunnel, the opposition team began to pipe up, sly comments were thrown at me from every angle.
“No pressure welbz,” and “the goal’s over there” were a selection of the sarcastic comments said by the opposition team. I tried to shake off the comments and focus on the game ahead.

“Ahhhhhhh!” I suddenly screamed, as a sharp pain shot through my arm. I looked down to my left to see a huge False Widow Spider sinking its fangs into my wrist. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life! The next thing I saw was the back of my eye lids as I fainted to the ground.
“Dan! Dan, wake up!” I heard repeatedly shouted in my ear, before I quickly jumped up. I was been dragged back into the dressing room, I thought my chances of playing were now definitely over.
“I’m fine! I can play!” I yelled as I tried to force myself back into the tunnel.
Something was strange, my body was stronger than ever, my confidence was sky high, I felt like a completely different person. I just wanted to get on the pitch.           It was one of the strangest moments of my life, but that was at the back of my mind. All the nerves had gone, and I was raring to go! I made my way through the tunnel as we walked onto the pitch. The atmosphere in the stadium was buzzing. The crowd was repeatedly chanting my name and wanted to them what I could do.
The game started. Santi Cazorla passed me the ball, my first run with the ball was messi-esque as I easily dribbled around 4 players before playing a neat pass to Alexis Sanchez. I had never run so fast or had a touch as good as I just had, I started to wonder what was happening. I felt insane as I thought to myself that this spider had given me powers, it felt like something out of a movie.
As the game went on my amazing form continued, it was the 72nd minute when I completed my first ever hat-trick in professional football. It was a moment I’d never forget as long as I lived, and the day that my football career changed forever.

Nike - Always On The Run

I like how this Nike advertisement shows the route of a jogger without physically showing him. The brightly coloured blurred lines imply the speed and energy of the jogger clearer than it would be to see the jogger himself. The dark city background makes the coloured lines look electric, emphasising the energy within the image.
I think this is a clever way of implying movement, and I could therefore test ways to incorporate lines and colour into my work to show the movement of the city.

Making Glass Cows by Assembly

This video shows the making of the glass cows that were used in the Anchor milk adverts. It shows the stages that led to the final product before being put into the advertisements.

Idris Khan

Idris Khan uses the technique of layering photographs from different angles over one another, I like how this makes the building blurry and gives it a sense of movement.
It makes the image look like an illusion as the building seems to look like it's spinning. I think that this only applies because of the cylinder shape of the building and the horizontal lines consistent throughout it. I don't think that this illusion would apply if the object was square.
I think that the black and white colour scheme and the blurry style of the photos gives an eerie feel and a sense of ghost like images. This makes me think the buildings look very old and that they could perhaps be haunted.

City In Flux Brief Ideas Road Map

Brian Yen

I like how Brian Yen shows the movement in the city clearly through a simple photograph. To me, it implies how city life is never still and there is always something going on. I think that this links perfectly into my project the 'City in Flux' as it implies how the city is always changing.
Yen seems to have used the technique of slowing down the shutter speed to capture the movement and so it doesn't look like a still photo. The movement is shown in the lines and the way that the colours blend together.
I intend to play around with the shutter speeds of a camera to test this. Another option to show movement could be to layer photos over one another, lowering the opacity.
