Cinema 4D Prototyping Packaging

I have created digital prototypes of a can and bottle. I practised using the example labels we were given in the workshop and then went away and developed the design so my prototypes were more unique.
This example of a still image demonstrates the effects I am able to create using Cinema 4D. Lighting and cameras can be put in place to experiment with shadows, creating a three dimensional image. Cinema 4D can be used to create realistic representations of design for a product, modelled digitally. This is an effective way of experimentation and is cheaper than it would be producing it physically.

Experimenting with Typography

In addition to looking at memories, I have experimented with fruit to create handmade typography as another way to give my future self advice. I like this idea as I feel that the message is exaggerated because of what the text it is written in, in this case fruit. I think that this idea allows me to be more creative when communicating the messages that I want to get across. These messages could be presented as visuals in my Guide to Happiness Booklet.
This idea came across me from the work we have started doing in the process and production module which I have enjoyed. I could therefore link this idea in with my food typography work too.

After Effects - Turning a Story into Infographics

Bill Maher - Irritable Bowl Syndrome from Cub Studio on Vimeo.

This video is an example of infographics. The video uses simplistic graphic design such as icons, charts and diagrams, which are suggestive of data and information.
Minimal text is used within the design. Infographics are interactive with the viewer and the appearance of the design is important to be made visually engaging.
It is a form of communication, informing knowledge that can be presented quickly and clearly. Infographics also provides a creative way of stating facts and figures.

Bill Maher’s infographic video uses a limited colour palette and simplistic shapes to communicate the information given. When presenting information quickly, it must not be overly complicated therefore the minimal design is more effective.

I have created my own infographic animation using After Effects. The task asked that we base it on a fairytale or children’s story therefore, I based mine on The Three little pigs. I can demonstrate numbers of the pigs, wolf and houses using an infographic animation. I created the imagery using Adobe Illustrator.

I have developed my first attempt at the infographic animation and created a version I feel tells the story more clearly. Through practicing a process over, you are less likely to forget how it was done. An infographic needs to be clear in communicating its purpose or information.

Creating Typography with Food

When using different foods, I found that some mediums are harder to work with than others. This must be taken into consideration when deciding what to use for the type you wish to create. To experience using different foods to create type, I created one letter to see how it would turn out. Jam has a consistency that changes with temperature. When left in the fridge, the jam is stiff in the jar however, when warmer, can liquify and become harder to control when working with.
Temperature is a factor I could experiment with as it may transform the material I choose to work with and create an alternative effect.

Thinking about transforming materials using temperature, I have used toast to create type. I thought about using breakfast foods to suggest words relating to the morning such as 'Wake Up' and 'Good Morning.'

Experimenting with sauce, a medium I thought would be hard to work with, I found that I could control the type with the bottle. It may be that I have to source other objects to control how my type is formed.

Type Delight - Nina Harcus

"Type Delight' is a conceptual illustrative cookbook about Marcell, a Patisserie chef who uses food to communicate his infatuation.'
I have used foods such as jam and toast to create type and generate ideas for a final outcome. When researching others approaches, I found an example of typography using food. I felt that when making my handmade type, the word I wrote must reflect the medium used to create it.

Using food to create type within a cookery book is relevant and a creative way to communicate with the reader. When coming to a final outcome, I will think about how I will capture the image and the medium used to create the type.

Barcelona Animation

Barcelona animation from Sam Atack on Vimeo.

In this module, I have learnt how to work with cameras in After Effects and have been introduced to the page turn effect.  Our task was to use design a scene, made up of different layer. I have used imagery form a holiday in Barcelona to illustrate my scene which I created initially in Illustrator.
When converting into After Effects, I created a distance between the layers so that the camera will capture each layer after the other. Each layer will appear at different times.
I applied the page turn effect which meant that as the camera reaches the next layer, it appears as though the layers are being opened up.
Effect- Distort- CC Page turn.

The texture I have applied to the layers creates a more three dimensional effect than if I was to use a block colour.

Analogue Communique

This task was to write I am... and finish the sentence with something that defines us. I started by making a list of things that explain who I am.
I thought about using my own handwriting which I is unique to me. 'I am what I am' signifies that handwriting is part of an individuals identity as everybody's handwriting is different. I found this task to be personal therefore I wanted to show this through typography.

I went on to explore how emotion and feeling can impact my handwriting. I have emphasised the feeling of tiredness and how it can impact the appearance of my writing. I thought about how we feel and act when we are tired. I began to loose concentration and the letters became abstracted. I wanted the type to reflect how I felt. The lettering shows the lack of control and begins to fade, much how we feel as we start to fall asleep.

Feeling cranky or grouchy is also expressed within this style of writing. When tired, its common to become tetchy and easy to snap.

This shows my development of the 'I am what I am' idea. I have experimented with different media and tools such as pen, ink, paint and paint brushes. By doing this, I have found that type can be impacted by the tools and media used to create it. I will remember this when thinking about how I wish to create my final outcome.

I have scaled up my design to one letter per A3 piece of paper. This has developed my thoughts on the composition of the piece. I consider the emotion of tiredness to show a lack of control, crankiness and sometimes boredom. I have used a black paint to write the words ‘I am tired’ which appears to be a boring colour and significant of night time (the time we sleep). The letters are gestural and can be seen to suggest the lack of control and liveliness. People can become tetchy when tired therefore the fluidity of the lines appear unordered and in some way grouchy and unpredictable.

I have structured the letters so the word ‘Tired’ drifts out of line, representative of the way we drift off when tired. Also, expressing the ideas of loosing concentration and control.

Photoshop Workshop - Creating Gifs and Videos

In this workshop, we firstly looked at creating simple gifs in Photoshop. We created some quick artwork so we could spend more time learning how to make it animate. Although this is very simple, I feel that this technique will allow me to be very creative with my ideas, and therefore make a more interesting gif.

To start, we made each frame of the gif on different layers. Once that was finished, we clicked 'Create Frame Animation' on the Timeline window to begin the animation process. Each of the layers that I created then went into individual frames for the gif. I then changed the timings to 0.1 seconds which I felt worked best. This could be outputted as a gif or a video.

We then looked at alternative way of making a video. By enabling 'Onion Skins' you can see the previous layer whilst creating the current layer, and therefore giving a lot smoother animation. After experimenting with this technique, which I feel I could use in a very creative way, I rendered the video.

The final technique that we learnt for creating videos in Photoshop, was to trace over an existing video layer by layer. This resulted in a simple stickman showing the movement of the dancer. I feel that I have learnt a lot in the workshop.
